Dr. Alfonso Mercado received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University (APA Accredited). He was born and raised in Los Angeles and studied psychology at California Lutheran University.
Currently, Dr. Mercado is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Science and School of Medicine's Psychiatry and Neurology Department at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley and is a Licensed Psychologist. He is Bi-lingual and fluent in Spanish. Clinically, he treats children, adolescents, and adults individually and in group therapeutic modalities and conducts psychological evaluations.
Dr. Mercado has extensive experience in assisting clients in a variety of areas, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief, serious mental disorders, and life transitions. He specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Anxiety and Depression, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Multicultural and Forensic Psychology. His Research lab focuses on Multicultural Mental Health, Treatment efficacy with culturally diverse groups, Personality and Substance Abuse research with Latino populations, and examining trauma and resiliency with recent immigrants. He has provided customized workshops and seminars in a wide range of settings such as hospitals, mental health programs, businesses, law enforcement, universities, and school districts.
Dr. Mercado is also a Board of Trustee for the Texas Psychological Association, active member with the American Psychological Association and is a National Register Health Service Psychologist. He is also in the executive board for the South Texas Psychological Association and two other nonprofit organizations in the Rio Grande Valley.
